Nikon SB-900 power failure and Nikon SB-900 failure explained

Nikon SB-900 thermal Fuse cuts off power when over heated and is not a failure.

Due to high volume of rapid shutter releases with the Nikon SB-900 flash, the Nikon SB-900 has a thermal fuse that will cut off power to prevent damage from over heating. This safety feature was installed due to the high volume of flash firing by digital DSLR users that have a history of damaging flash tubes and melting cases, diffusion panels and other internal parts. This safety feature will reduce repair needs, but users that are not aware why the flash would loose power think the Nikon SB-900 is failing. As soon as the flash and thremal fuse cools, the power is restored again.

Concider this! In the days of film cameras, a traditional wedding photographer would shoot 300 frames. Today, we have digital wedding photographers that shoot 3,000 or more frames.

That is why today's flash units are repaired more often that in the past. The Nikon SB-900 is a very good flash, but we suggest you keep a Nikon SB-800 or "back up" SB-900 around to use if you over heat the SB-900.
