Canon's update to the wildly popular full frame EOS 5D is here. The EOS 5D Mark II has a 21.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 Image Processor, a vast ISO Range of 100-6400 (expandable to ISO L: 50, H1: 12800 and H2: 25600), plus EOS technologies like Auto Lighting Optimizer and Peripheral Illumination Correction. It supports Live View shooting, Live View HD videos, and more. It can shoot up to 3.9 fps, has 9 AF points plus 6 AF assist points, a new 98% coverage viewfinder, a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) and a rugged build.

Canon's new 5D Mk2 21.1 mp full frame camera has a larger buffer than the the 5D, fire up to 3.9 fps and is well sealed to protect the shutter that is rated for 300,000 frames. The new Canon 5D MK 2 was tested in low light conditions using ISO 3200 and Nikon D300, Nikon D700 and Nikon D3 out perfromed Canon with lower noise and less grain than the Canon 5D MK2.

Sports photographers will be better suited to use Nikon D300, D700 or the D3 for low light conditions like night games and indoor sports like basketball.

Canon 5D MK 2 customers say that the video mode on this 5D MK 2 does not work the way they expected. Since the shutter is held open, auto focus will not adjust to distance to subject changes while recording and zoom lenses should not be used since any zoom movement may cause focus to alter. Also, video files are so large, that you can fill a memory card in minutes of recording. The suggestion is that photographers should not buy this camera for its video feature. Buy a camcorder for video. This feature is best suited for short video capture of unusual events on the go, like a car accident, crime in proggress etc.

Other reports is that the high ISO features fall short of Nikon's noise reduction technology using high ISO settings.

Due to high volume of rapid shutter releases with the Nikon SB-900 flash, the Nikon SB-900 has a thermal fuse that will cut off power to prevent damage from over heating. This safety feature was installed due to the high volume of flash firing by digital DSLR users that have a history of damaging flash tubes and melting cases, diffusion panels and other internal parts. This safety feature will reduce repair needs, but users that are not aware why the flash would loose power think the Nikon SB-900 is failing. As soon as the flash and thremal fuse cools, the power is restored again.

Southern Photo is looking for ways to by-pass this fuse and we will anounce our results shortly. Some customers may choose to by-pass this fuse if we are successfull.
